His lungs were burning, his vision blurry, and he knew what was happening. He was dying. Drowning. Another man in the sea, vanishing in the blue infinity. Maybe this was right for him to die like this, alone and hurt in the middle of a bad storm, just like he lived his life. Pain and loneliness was everything he knew anyway. And when he thought everything was gone, she came, held his hand and dragged him out of the darkness. A pure light that his eyes never saw before, confuse forms, soft touches, a sweet whisper…

But how?

He couldn’t believe in his eyes… Since he was a kid he heard the stories about the monsters of the sea. Mermaids who sang to men from the rocks and dragged them to the bottom of the ocean. But she saved him. She gave him life. And he couldn’t understand that. But he needed to believe, even if he was going insane. So he waited. Every night, watching the ocean hoping to see her again. She was different, she was real.

She knew that was wrong to save him…She knew the stories. How cruel men can be. How they abuse and kill what they don’t know…But she just couldn’t watch him die. He wasn’t fighting, just accepting his fate and it made her believe that he was dead even before the crash. How someone can be so lost? He seemed so defeated and vunerable…

Was a surprise when she saw him in the beach for the first time. Eyes trained in the water looking for something…For her? But he didn’t have a spear in his hand or hate in his eyes. So, every night she watched him from the darkness. Until watching was not enough anymore, she wanted to hear him,to talk to him. So she decided to risk it, she didn’t want to be afraid anymore, that she wanted him to be different, she wanted him to be good.

Instead of angry and violent, like she expected, he was surprised and eager to know more. To know her. And instead of a monster, he saw a beauty that was almost unbelievable.

"You saved me that night. Why?" - his voice was harsh even if that was not his intention. It sounded like an accusation and she didn’t like it.

"I should have let you die?" - For a moment he thought she was singing. Her voice small, sweet and melodic.

"I thought mer…mermaid kill men…"  It’s was hard to look in her impossibly blue eyes but he did. And regretted seeing the hurt there.

"And I thought men killed mermaids…" She wanted to be abrasive, but the trembling in her voice gave away how scared she was.

"I would never hurt you, I swear."  This time his voice was softer, low and steady.

"I would never let you die either.’

They spent days and nights together, getting to know each other, growing. He showed her that not every man was the same, not every man wanted to hurt her. That she should be cautious, but brave and strong. She showed him a new world: kindess, hope, friendship. She cared about him. They showed each other that there’s still good people in this world.

"Is this magic? The way I feel when I’m with you?"

"Magic? No… Do you believe in magic?"

"I…I never did before…"

"My dad always said that love is the only magic that exist. Something so strong, strong enough to make you change. That can melt two souls in one…Something that brings out the best of you. To be in love is the closest to magic you can be… Don’t you think that’s beautiful?"

As he looked at her eyes his world turned upside down and for that moment something made sense in his life.

"Do you believe in love, Daryl?"

"I never did before…"

The kiss was kind and powerful and they wished to be like that forever, but suddenly something was wrong. A pressure pushing them apart and the sea was moving, spinning. He was dragged from her and to the sand. She was suffocating, her throat burning and she could feel…”No.How could this be possible?”

That was like magic…

"Oh,Beth, you’re here…"- He said out of breath reaching for her small body brought by the waves "Beth you…you changed…How? You have…legs?" His mind couldn’t register what was in front of him.

"I don’t know." She was confused too, barely balancing herself while he dragged her to the sand "I  wanted so much to be here. To be with you…I made it."

"I…I thought you were gone." His hug was crushing and desperate. Like he wanted to be sure she was real and to never let her go.

"Hey, I’m here" She cradled his face between her hands, looking in his stormy

blue eyes “and I’m not gonna to leave you. Not when I finally found you”

they would have no claim on me if i did not desire it
for i belong to myself,
i am only my own—
half flowering creation,
half blistering hellfire.

Like nothing’s changed. Not true of course.

"Did you even fire a shot? All right. Let’s go. Let’s go. Are you just gonna stay here, huh? You’re just gonna die?"

“Lost in Hell,-Persephone,
Take her head upon your knee;
Say to her, "My dear, my dear,
It is not so dreadful here.”
